My camaro (z28 LT1) has six gears. The fifth gear does not work...it only grinds.
number one: is it bad to drive it without fifth gear on the hightway.

number two: How much does it cost "basicallly" to fix it, or is it something that can wait?

If it just skipped it it would not be bad but grinding is very bad causes metal shavings and transmissions hate that probably in the 350 to 500 dollar range but if you keep driving much much higher.

To fix 5th gear one must remove the entire transmission, then take apart the transmission, and put it back together. So you might as well have the entire transmission rebuilt while you are at it. If you remove the transmission you self then the rebuild cost should be between 500.00 to 1000.00USD. If your have someone do it for you then under 2000.00 USD is a good price. You may have better offers if you shop around.
Or your can go to a strip yard and by a used transmission and have it put in.

These guys are right it needs fixed and the prices are about right too, but be careful of which tranny shop you take it too, research it first. Check it on Better Business and check around town for bad reputations, such as tire shops oil change places ask them who they would recommend. some tranny shops will rip you off bad. I use to work for one that did. What every you do DONT try to take it on by yourself if you know nothing of transmissions and you try to do it yourself you will pay more money in the long run. Most tranny shops charge more if you have already tried to fix it because they have to figure out what went wrong in the first place then what you did wrong as well. Be Careful Good luck

I Have a 98 camaro and last year my second gear went out and i costed me about 550 but that was discounted about 200. This year i lost 5th and 6th(shift fork broke). I kept driving it and it kept getting worse. Over all this year for 5th and 6th I ended up paying about 1400. It's best if you fix it asap before it worsens like mine did.
