A "sign" in mythology is normally a special occurance, such as a falling star, or a white stag that appears suddenly when something special is about to or is happening...it is usually an action, something intangible.

A "token" is something you can hold in your hand. A ring could be a token that is given to another to say that one person speaks for the owner of the ring. Or it might be a symbol of a person or place, such as the jeweled leaves of Lotharian, were "tokens of the Lady" that the hobbits used to show they were under the Lady's protection.

A sign you can read, a token will get you on the subway.
Or a sign is a term of "things that are coming" and a "token" is a gesture of appreciation.

You're probably thinking a Sign & an Omen.... those are very similar. Token is not in the same category at all...
