Britain took the lead in abolishing slavery in the early 19th century. Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834, in the USA in 1865, and Brazil in 1898. However there are still places in Africa that practice slavery. I haven't heard any other country apologise for slavery though, like Tony Blair did recently.

The slave trade really never ended. Most people view slavery as the sale and purchase of human beings for the purpose of using them as work animals to do backbreaking manual jobs for as little or no pay at all. Although trafficking in people to be used as slaves in its many iterations has been deemed illegal, the practice still continues. It brings to mind Kathy Lee Gifford's clothing line being produced by third world country child laborers living in subhuman conditions, being paid pennies on the dollar not sufficient to provide them the nutrition their growing bodies need; young Asian women smuggled into the country being promised jobs that never materialize--instead they find themselves being forced into prostitution, made into sex slaves in order to repay their masters for the cost of getting into the U.S.; the sweat shops in our country that turns out fashion items sold in upscale stores, carrying logos that sell for a lot while rewarding their original creators (laborers) too little; and so on and so on . Yes, my friend, slavery is very much alive and well today that you can even say it is thriving. For wherever it is that man can profit from greed, he will exploit his brother to the fullest in the pursuit of the almighty dollar .
