Since gerbils have relatively the same breeding habits as mice, I would suggest seperating the babies into two different sexes at about 5-8 weeks. It all depends on when the mother weens them. If you see the gerbils eating normal food and not being so dependant on the mother for food (in other words, you never see them suckle), that is a pretty good estimate as to when they are full weened. Fights are most likely to occur among male mice, but because they are of the same liter, the most you will see in the catagory of an argument would be mounting (an act of dominance) and a little bit of occasional belligerant squeaking.

The most important thing is to make sure you seperate them by sex. Gerbils will mate with their brothers and sisters, which can cause lots of problems for you, the owner. Inbreeding and early pregnancy are among the list of these problems.

If you have any other questions or would like more information, feel free to email me- d0rked@comcast.net.

Good luck!

The lady at the pet store told us that you should have only one or they could kill each other. Babies are fine, but when they get a few weeks old, she said you have to sparate them. She said at the store, they had left some together too long, and I know this is gross, but she said they found some with their heads eaten off.

if you feed them and change there litter on a regular basis you can get away with 2 per every 1.5 sq. feet of cage

You should get two at the same time,so they'll learn not to fight with each other.
