Yo, Rocky....
First of all, when you formatting a HDD, it's not like erasing a cassette tape. In a tape, the erasure procedure rearranges the magnetic particles on the tape, make them unreadable. In formatting, the computer simply marks the files as being overwritten. You have to remember that all information is no more than a series of Hexidecimal numbers, from 0-9 and A-F. Even if you completely wipe a HDD, you are simply rewriting all of these numbers to zero. Your hard drive is constantly overwriting sectors. That is exactly the principle behind defragmenting. In short... NO.

No damange will happen from reformatting because hard drives are designed to be reformatted from time to time. But just like anything else, it'll eventually begin to go bad and give you some problems. The first sign is generally more and more bad sectors being identified.
But generally speaking, hard drives are designed to last, and I've reformatted the same drives time and time again over years and years, and they still work just fine.
