I have a 95 Subaru Impreza, 1.8L SOHC, I try to start it, it cranks, but it will not start. I have checked all possible culprits, fuel, spark, fuses, relays, sensors and replaced the battery, alternator and checked the timing belt, all is ok and it still will not start... I'm pulling my hair out. Please help.

It is possible that the timing belt has jumped. Usually when a timing belt malfunctions, it does so by breaking. This disables the engine and is easy to find. If the timing belt jumps a few teeth, the valve timing will be incorrect but to the casual observer, the timing belt seem to be intact.

Do a compression test. If the timing belt has jumped, you will get some really weird results (some cylinders near normal, with others very low) You should be looking for results in excess of 150 p.s.i. per cylinder with no more than 15% variation between the highest and the lowest.

Another possibility is fuel quality. Water in the fuel, diesel mixed in with the fuel.

Consider lack of injector pulse. You have good fuel pressure, but are the fuel injectors actually opening. Try running the engine by spraying carb cleaner into the intake. If the engine starts (it will only run for a few seconds) then consider injector pulse.

How about a plugged catalytic converter. If the engine can't breath, it can't start. Use a vacuum gauge to check vacuum during cranking. You should get 2 to 4" H. G. If in doubt, you can loosen the bolts on the front exhaust pipe to create a large leak that will allow the engine to breath.

Make sure the intake is not plugged. I found a bird's nest in an intake tube once. There were even birds in there!

One thing is for sure, if you have:

1. Good compression
2. Good quality fuel getting into the cylinder
3. Hot spark that occurs at the right time....

The engine HAS TO start. It does not have a choice.

Good Luck

Check for loose vacuum lines too. Also, if you've checked the fuel, have you checked the fuel filter? Also check the fuel pump...all the cranking in the world won't do a bit of good if the gas isn't getting to the engine. Try turning the key so it's not quite to the point where it would start cranking, (That spot where it starts dinging or beeping at you to remind you to close the door and put on your seatbelt.) and hold it there for a few seconds...if the fuel pump is in the rear, you might hear a humming or whirring sound coming from it...Then crank it. Also try starting it in neutral (I don't think I need to tell you to keep your foot on the break while doing this!) instead of park. If that doesn't work, consider getting the computer checked for error codes.

Having checked, that I have fuel, I have spark, I would verify my timing, TDC. Then do a compression check. If you have fuel, air, spark, it should run. Verify that you have spark at the spark plug. If you have a fuel pressure gage check the fuel pressure. Some fuel injectors require a certain amount of PSI to work (35+psi) If you do not have fuel pressure check the fuel pump. If you can not get it to run them take it to Subaru. good luck.
