Even though there is a lot of folklore about Atlantis, there is no proof if it existed or where it was. It has been proposed that a few islands in the Mediterranean could fit the bill but so far no luck. It may just be a fairy tale that Plato made up since it seems that no one else knew about it but him.

A lot of archaeologists&geologists think the basis for the Atlantis myths was the eruption of Kythera in the Aegean Sea about 1500BCE. The thriving bronze age culture of traders and seafarers living there were pretty much wiped out.

The eruption and subsequent mayem is also thought to have led to the decline of the similar Minoan cultures on Crete.
