You can only stop your period if you are using the contraceptive pill. This puts you in control of your cycle as once you have been taking it for at least 21 days, or 30 depending on the pill, you can go straight into the next pack without a break and miss a period. This is only good to do for up to 2 months though. You can also delay it by going into the next pack for just a few days. Your period will start 3-5 days after finishing your pills.
You are normally advised to start the pill on the first day of your period so you will have to have your period this time, unless your doctor advises you that it is ok to start before you are due.

If you are on the pill you can delay you period, its not recommended that you do it every month, but for something like a wedding it can be very useful. You just go straight into your next package of pills instead of taking 7 days off or 7 days of dummy pills.
If you are not on the pill I don't think that there is anything that you can do at home. A doctor might be able to give you something, if you can give them a good reason why you don't want to get your period.
Many hormonal birth control methods reduce or eliminate your periods. It is definitely worth investigating at your clinic.

First I advise you to talk to a professional about this, but here is what I know.
Depo Provera - is a birth control that fools your body into thinking you're pregnant, therefore after a few months, you no longer have periods, as long as you stay on it. Its a shot.
Seasonale - This will limit your periods to four times a year.
Hope this helps, please research more about these options and talk to a professional before making a decision.

just take your next packet of pills on your pill free days .You must continue the whole packet though,so you will be taking 2 months pills without a break. You may or may not get spotting, but you wont have a period. It is not harmful to do this, so don't worry, although it's best not to do it regularly as it might mess up your cycle.

if you are on the pill dont take a break, this will put it off for a while, but personally you shouldnt muck about with your system this way unless you consult a Dr for proper advice. I am sure there is something they can give you, I have heard of women getting something so they dont have a period while abroad on holiday or for whatever reason they have. But messing with nature can mess up your future.

There are birth control pills available through doctor's prescription... they are capable of reducing the number of periods a woman gets in a year to only 4. So my suggestion is you go see your GP about it. I don't think they'd be available on the market without prescription though.

You can 'stop' it by taking the Pill. You can also see your doctor and (provided it's for a good reason of course) they can give you something to delay your period (my friend did this for when she was getting married and going on her honeymoon).
I agree that it is not a brilliant idea to mess with your cycle, as it could have repercussions. I would talk to your doctor.

unfortunately, there is no way of stopping or delaying it, you have to deal with it. yeah i know its hard, but its kinda what gives you the ability to have a child, so you should be happy you are healthy & that you have it. there are some woman who dont get it & would give anythign to. you cant delay a period, but if you use a tampon its almost like its not there. just keep stong, evey girl goes though it.
P.S. using a pill could be very bad! just let nature have its way.

If you take the contraceptive pill you can delay the start of it by carrying on with the next pack without a break, otherwise I wouldnt have a clue, messing with your cycle isnt really something you should be doing
