Celebrating the birth of Jesus.

It was one of the four quarter days in the old English calendar:

Candlemas - the Mass of the candles (Mass being the word for the Catholic Eucharistic service).

Michelmas - the Mass for St. Micheal.

Martinmas - the Mass for St Michael.

Christmas the Mass for Christ.

These four feast days fell on, more or less, what would be the 4 quarter points of a Calendar year.

Christmas was the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the second most important event in the Christian Calendar, the first being Easter Sunday. The 25th Dec may not be the real birthday of Jesus, but although his birthday is not actually known it is so important that it must be celebrated once a year by Christians. The early Christians had to choose a day for this celebration and they chose a day which had formerly been a celebration for the birthday of the sun, a pagan festival, but very significant for Christians because Jesus WAS the light of the world. So, many pagans stopped worshipping the sun after they came to recognise that Jesus was the true light of the world.

Christmas is the birth of Jesus. It is a birthday celebration and a christian holiday that roughly corresponds to several other religions' holidays. Theree are also Hannuka and Kwanza, to name two. Early Christians adapted a pagan holiday that occurred in winter. The idea is that despite the cold or cool weather, hope is reborn.

I believe it is family. In all sense of the word. I could spout the whole story from the bible, but the basic idea was that "He" came back to take care of us, his "children." That was his "gift." So I think that Christmas is just a special time more than any to be around family, or anyone that you are very close to and think of as family.
