What that is used for is to figure out the displacement of a cylinder in an engine. You would then multiply your answer X number of cyclinders and you have the displacement of your engine (5.2 liter or 318ci)
Bore is the measured diameter of the cylinder hole.
Stroke is the distance the piston moves within the cylinder.

But here is a really cool page that describes it better.

So if someone says their motor is bored and stroked, it means they have fitted bigger pistons that move farther then the last set and hence increased their total displacement.

Happy holidays

Bore is the diameter of the piston. Stroke is how much the piston moves up and down in the cylinder. 1/2 the diameter squared X pi X the stroke gives you the displacement of the cylinder. Multiply this by the number of pistons to get total displacement of the engine.

Bore is the size of the block cylinder opening in which the piston travels. If someone tell you they, 'had it punched thirty over.' That indicates the cylinder wall is .030" wider then OEM.
Stroke is the distance the piston travels within that cylinder, this is determined by the length of the 'connecting' rod. The 'connecting rod' is held in place by the wrist pin at the piston end and the crankshaft on the other end.

bore is the size of the hole,,for the piston,,stroke it the length the piston and rod travels up and down,,this is what creates horse power,,but that's what is meant by it,,good luck.
