I want to drive somewhere nearby for a short holiday, 3 days or so, bcos I've a good car. I'd like to go somewhere that doesn't involve too arduous driving. Can anyone suggest a good place to go? Thanks for any suggestions!

There are many good places near Chennai.
The good road to drive is the ECR (East Coast Road). On this, you can go to Fisherman's Cove - a resort hotel or Mahabalipuram (the famous sea shore historical place for good stone architecture) or go to Auroville in Pondicherry. You can also go to VGP Beach (if you have kids in your party)
You can choose the site best suited to your tastes or visit all of them sequentially.

There is Kone falls on the tirupati route. The falls are quite nice and u could also combine a trip to Tirupati and Kalahasti. One more possibility is Yelagiri, Amridhi and Kavalur. All these can be easily reached from Vellore. Then of course there is Pondicherry.

Try to go to Kodaikannal - the poor mans Ooty
or travel to Temple City of Thanjavur / Trichy / Mayiladuthurai

If your in or close to New York State, the best place in my experience (14 years of experience) it has to be Lake George Village. Its pretty quiet this time of year until January.
