I would say most acceptable standard is 802.11g (54Mbits/sec). Most routers can accomodate 253 wireless users simultaneously. If you want to make a free hotspot then just open network and do not put any encryption on it, be aware of potential security issues with that one. Enabling encryption slows down most cheaper routers unless you are getting Cisco, NetGear Pro, etc. so try to get just simple encryption if you have a lot of people connecting, it will be easier on router and provide more compatibility for users.

I used a, but don't think it's the best choice. Any way try several of them to totally determine which one better suits your computer network.
