Money can buy small amounts of happiness but it will NEVER be enough and that "happiness" is only shallow so it doesn't last too long.

It can't buy happiness, but it can get you WAY closer to it than poverty can: 1. Health: Money will get you best the doctors, into the best hospitals, afford you the best care. 2. Friends: sure, maybe they only like you for your money. You may never know. But if they turn out to be jerks, you can buy new ones! 3. Stress: the #1 cause of stress (and marital problems) is money worries. If you have money, you don't have to worry about it. 4. Comfort: money will buy you a softer mattress, a smoother running car, a home with central heat and air. These things will make you happier than a hard mattress, a junk car, and/or living on the streets in a cardboard box. 5. Education: school costs money. So does traveling. Both these things help to make people smarter, more insightful, more charitable. If you have money, you can afford a good education and the opportunity to travel and get to know/understand other people. Bring on the big bucks !

I like to think that it's not a direct "cause and effect" relationship, but it can be very positively correlated!
I would also like to point out, that earning the money makes you feel better in the long run than just getting money that you didn't earn. I think your less likely to do stupid things with your money when you didn't earn it. Earning it also gives you a greater feeling of self-worth.
One way in which money doesn't make you happy, is if it makes you take the easy road every time and buy yourself out of any trouble/stress. Money cannot buy you the peace of mind, wisdom, humility, sense of self-worth which all may come from overcomming hard times.
It sure can buy some great pills and expensive counseling though! =)
...that's a few thoughts about money and happiness

I agree with you, money can buy happiness. If you have enough money you won't have to spend every second of your life working and then taking care of the necessities like cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping, etc... Just thinking about all that makes me thankful I have enough money now not to have to work two jobs! And I am thankful I can afford to have a computer and an Internet connection.
With money you could find interesting things to do and your job could be finding ways to help humanity. I'd love to be Bill Gates! Sure rich people have relationship and family problems just like the rest of us, but it's better to be rich while you work through hard times.

well to be honest I really do believe money can buy me happiness. I would travel the entire world, buy like 3 houses around the world, & stay at them at different times throughout the year. Etc. How could all that not make someone happy?

Money can make you feel better by providing security, but happiness is different. It really has very little to do with money.
NOT having money is a sure way to be miserable though. Earn all you can and give the excess to charity.

So why so many very rich people end up into alcohol and worse into drugs? The examples are endless.
I think it because they have understood that even with all their money they cannot be happy and this causes them even a worse feeling because they really can't buy happiness!!!!

Seems to me that having a good supply of money is going to make for a far HAPPIER life than NOT having a good supply.
I think the cliche is something that a lot of poor people tell themselves.
