I thought I would find it quite easily but it turns out that I couldn't find the area where the pilot light is! Obviously I don't want to be throwing flames around where a gas leak is occuring.... The results may be.......too exciting for me.

IF it has a pilot.....there will be a 1/4" line coming out of the gas valve up to your burners. If no line, then you have either a spark ignition system or a hot surface ignitor. Another way to verify if you have a pilot style system is if your gas valve has "PILOT" setting and not just "OFF or ON"

If a "gas leak is occuring" you shouldn't be looking for a pilot light. TURN THE GAS OFF>

with the furnace not running turn the lights off in the room. look for the flame in the dark which will be much easier to find. If you have no flame then you have an electronic ignition furnace

if it's a newer gas furnace it may not have a pilot light. so looking for it is fruitless. it could be the ignitor, the circut board, etc. if it is a new furnace, best bet is to call the local gas company or call a local heating maintence company.

It's usually behind a little door or flap... sometimes you have to take a penl off.... and there shoudl be a dial or guage nearby to adjust the height of the flame. HTH

newer furnaces don't have pilot lights. they have electric matches. If you have a gas leak, you should call your fire department.
