Next to never, just had a look at some of my resolved questions and found a couple of comments. Wonder how many others I have. I really should go and check them all.
I did notice Blueâ«Faerie had left a comment once when I picked her answer as best.
I've also noticed noTpoOdLE has left a comment under some of my best answers.

Yes, I love giving a comment so the person getting best answer will know why I liked his or her answer. Sometimes I'm specific and other times I just thank them for their answer.

Try to unless there was only one!
At least then it indicates to the other people who took time to help you out the reasons behind your choice.
