The UK skills shortage is frequently in the news at present. Is there really a skills shortage ? If so, why are so few companies offering training such as apprenticeships and graduate development programmes. Perhaps it is just too expensive and they would rather shift the blame to schools, colleges and Universities so that their short term approach is disguised. They can then further reduce their costs by recruiting foreign staff.

no its not a myth - don't worry we will soon be one big warehouse - as long as you can work in logistics you will be fine - we are running our own skill base into the ground by over promoting people who are too short sited or scared to encourage their staff to grow but mentally and in skills Keep Them Down they just might steal our jobs !!! its just a vicious cycle

I suspect it's a lack of motivation that's to blame rather than a lack of skills. Most people are given ample opportunities to learn (not that they're the right ones for everyone), but they do not take them. Schoolkids are not encouraged to think about their futures before they start deciding what subjects they want to do and even then, these bear no relation to career choices.

I would say the ones with the real skills shortages are the working people who are not given financial support to fund college tuition and were not given the oportunities at school.
