Do you know if the teacher has any hobbies? If so, buy something connected to the hobby. Otherwise consider a nice Christmas decoration, candy or chocolates if she would like that, a book, a journal, candles, a special local craft, or a special homemade gift such as cookies, fruit cake, "gifts in a jar", some special coffee if she is a coffee drinker, etc.

I am a fifth grade teacher and I would much rather have a student give me a gift that can be used in the classroom than personally. A board game would be awesome. You could also go to the local teacher's store like A+ or The Learning Shop - they have tons and tons of stuff. My class really likes our Grow-A-Frog and the Sea Monkeys we have...anything that can appreciated by all is a great gift for a teacher.

I like to give people consumable things. xD
Y'know, something that doesn't take up space or live on a desk. I mean, honestly, how many "A+ teacher" mugs does one person need?
Usually something nice like chocolate or candies are good. ;D That way, if the teacher doesn't like chocolate/ is on a diet, they can either easily regift it or serve it to guests to dispense of it. It's more convenient than having to find a home for yet another pencil holder or paper weight.

I agree with Anna H. something for the classroom or a gift card so that the teacher can purchase something for the classroom or for themselves.

A creative craft made from yourself.
Or if you're not the artistic type, buy something crafty but at the same time useful.
(i.e. pencil holder or picture frame)
