IP addresses are unique and while normal users cannot get hold of your personal details, police can get it with subpoenas if they wish.

Hello,

Your IP address is assigned by the ISP (internet service providor) and is given out either dynamically which means each time you connect your computer to the internet your machine is given a different internet address (abit like a phone number, so your phone number would change each time).

Or, were the IP is a static IP, meaning it is given to you by your ISP whilst you remain a customer with them and so the IP doest change over time (remains the same).

Neither is better than the other in my opinion. OK! yes the ISP has your name & address and knows your a customer but they wont give that out to anyone else. Even if they are asked, as this is confidential information. So its not shared with anyone else.

**The point is that your IP address can only be traced back to the network or internet providing company. And "NOT directly" to a named person/s or name & address.

**Only if you are the owner of an internet "domain name" then that's a different matter & yes! your contact details can be easily traced, why? because they will be held on Nominets or Internics database of domain name owners. I have my domain regsitered to me, so that would apply to my domain name but NOT my IP address.

**The ISP would NOT give out your details (name or address) to a third party normally. Most ISP here in the UK have very strick policies on such things as confidentiality & privacy. (unless it was part of a criminal investigation and the police where in involved or the law broken).

**Most banking software uses SSL (secure socket layers) as part of the connection, this means the connection is encrypted. You can easily see if this is the case, there are two things to look out for 1) http should turn into https 2) look for the little padlock symbol bottom right in your web browser, infact if you click on this padlock it will tell you what strength encryption is being used such as 128bit,etc.

**Id fraud is usually only happens were the fraudsters get hold of your details because you either gave them by mistake, were tricked into giving them like phishing emails etc where the username & passwords are stupidly given. Or where someone has literally gone through your rubbish bin for banking details as happened to me a few years ago. Now I shread everything bank related.

Your ip address can be tracked, but only back as far as your isp. In any case, most ip addresses nowadays are "dynamic", that is they change every time you connect. Don't worry about it, just make sure you don't fall for all those "phishing" scams that try to get hold of your bank account details.

You can definitely track down the area that you live in from it. The begining part of the IP is where people get that information from.

an ip address can be traced to your internet provider but it doesn't have a name or address attached to it.

You can be traced by your IP address but they can only get your name and address through the server. Be careful with internet banking.
