The wider one is the white wire, neutral.

Never NEVER get fooled by the term "neutral". That is the common mistake that gets a lot of people killed

because

The white side of the circuit can have full voltage potential via feedback from some device on the same or another circuit.

If you run into an electrician who calls the common leg of the circuit "neutral" fire him and get somebody else.

is it 110volts ? or 220 volts ? this makes a difference. 110v black & white, 220v 2- blacks no white.
