I recently had to format my pc because of data corruption. I re-installed windows xp sp2. But i couldnt locate my sound card drivers. They are not available on the manufacturers website either.

How do I know which sound card is installed in my pc and how do i get the drivers for it.

In case i have to open the CPU, can you please tell me where exactly the sound card is located so that i can find out which company it is from....

Easiest way is to download Everest Home Edition, which is a small program that gives you almost all technical info about your PC. Just start up the program after installing it and go to: Computer>Summary>Multimedia. There you find the info you need.

Most people's sound cards these days are integrated into the motherboard. You can tell where the sound card is by looking where your speaker and microphone connections are. If they go directly into the motherboard, then you have integrated sound. If they go into a card that fits into a motherboard, then you have a separate sound card. Either way, look on the card or the motherboard for some identifying markings. Write down as much as you can. If its integrated, try going to the manufacturer of the motherboard's website. If its not integrated you want to go to the manufactuerer of the sound card's website and try to locate drivers. If you still can't find anything, you want to find the manufacturer of the audio chipset. Most integrated sound and a lot of sound cards contain chipsets which are then used by bulk fly by night manufacturers. The chipset providers themselves can often provide drivers. This would be difficult for the untrained eye to determine which is the correct chip and number to look for, but usually if you do a Google search on the other two, you will see someone else who was looking for the same drivers you were.

Well there are two ways we can solve this issue.
If these type of problems come try to boot with Knoppix Live CD/DVD. If you don't have one First try to download it from http://www.knoppix.net/get.php. Now burn the copy to DVD/CD and boot the system with the Knoppix Live CD/DVD watch the screen take a note about what sound card is detecting. Also make sure when Knoppix CD/DVD starts it generates the sound. Now shut down Knoppix remove the CD/DVD go to Yahoo! or google search and try to find the device driver. This I am sure will work out.

If you are going to remove the computer box. Try to locate the soundcard chip which generally small black color square generally on the motherboard. Somtimes often in the older system it may be as PCI Card as well. Once you locate do a search on the internet sure you can.

Sound card should be near the place where you connect your speakers. You should probably ask the dealer(who sold you the computer) about the sound card.
