Iceland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.
During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, , Halloween

Well Halloween is several things.
Pagan New Year.
The Night when the vail between this world and the Spirit world is at its thinnest.
For most it just means a night for kids to dress up ( like spirits )
and go trick ( maybe pranks at someones house ) or treating, (try to get candy.)

The meaning of Halloween is when you remember the dead. Many other races long ago would dance at a fire and remember the dead. They would do some pretty creepy stuff. The candy part is that some religions would think demons and undead would come to "kill" them or steal their children, so they would leave candy and treats outside their homes for the demons and undead to take and leave them alone.

Hallowe'en means hallowed evening, venerated eve, holy evening. It is Oct.31 and the next day is All Saints Day (feast in honor of all the saints). It is said that on Hallows Eve (Halloween) that the veil between this world and the next is easily penetrated; therefore,we can communicate with the "dead" more clearly. It is also known in Wicca as Samhain. Blessed be.

There are actually two. One is to make someone's house look like bird crap and the other is to egg someone's house for candy. There's got to be a little fun to it.
