light travels in straight lines. so the farther away and the length of vertical angle of the light source you are, so the length of your shadow taken from the light source to the top of your head and finally reaching the ground will shorten the due to you being nearer towards the light source and the increase of the vertical height. And the reverse for the lengthening of shadows.
There is an apparent exception. That is where the light source is at Astronomical distances. Like the Sun for example, where due to the distance, the angle of the vertical height only changes due to the apparent motion of the Sun from East to West in the Northern Hemisphere. In fact its these angles and the relationship with time which has allowed ships for 100's of years to navigate our Seas and Oceans.

For the same reason that your shadow is shortest at midday (when the sun is actually shining!). The length of your shadow depends on how much of you body length is blocking the light path.

Same thing at night, exept there will be several light sources, all casting their own shadow from your body.

Stand under a street lamp and you will have one very strong (but short) shadow, but you may also have other weak shadows from the other street lamps, car headlights, house lights etc.
As you move away from this lamp, the shadow will grow weaker and longer, while the shadow caused by the strongest/nearest lightsource will grow shorter and darker as you move towards it.

Draw a sketch. Light source point up high and you down below. If you are directly below you cast no shadow. As you walk away, you block more of the light and your shadow grows. Draw it. Really. Do it now. See? Not such a big mystery after all. Is it? Have you drawn it yet? Why not? What is the point in asking the question then? Draw it. Ach, forget it. Stay ignorant then.

As you are walking the distance between you and the street lights is changing, meaning that the length of the shadow is too.
