What does this mean?I run the full chkdsk occasionally and it comes up clean--is there a way to fix it?It stalls at a few points on startup .

best way to do scandisk, chkdisk, and defrag, is in safe mode,
safe mode is DOS, (Disk Operating System) that does not have window files loaded into memory, or using the windows page file system of your hard disk drive, doing it this way is faster, and safer

Chkdsk will show your the problems if there is any. Till it does not show any defect or ask for 'Fix the problem automatically', don't worry. Try to run the disk fragmn once so the files are organized.

Phase 4 is very slow. Are you sure it is stalled. Try being patient and see what happens.
