How can one judge if someone's a good actor from just watching a movie? Doesn't being a good actor depend on how many times you have to repeat a scene/how good you are at memorising your lines/how good you are at emoting yourself? I really don't get the Oscars and those best actor/actress awards... IMO, from a movie, you can only judge if an actor's been emoting himself well or not. What else is there to judge?

I think that the depth to which a character is portrayed speaks for the quality of the actor. I think an actor that can handle a range of characters making each one unique yet his or her own can be considered a good actor/actress. Someone that's not stuck in a particular genera, someone who can basically move from comedy, to drama, to action/adventure who can emote the feelings of that character past the big screen to the audience and bring them into the story, entertain and keep their attention are all qualities that make up a good actor. Nicholas Cage, Patrick Stewart, Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, Cate Blanchette, Emma Thompson, Johnny Depp, these are all great actors that show tremendous range and ability to do just that.
