Because long, long ago people used natural decorations for trees. You couldn't go out to the store and buy this stuff...so they strung popcorn and cranberries and such.

Well.. It is NOT because popcorn is a sign of Christmas or that popcorn has anything to do with Christmas..... but the idea of a garland does have a Christmas signification.. You make a garland of popcorn and then wrap it around a Christmas tree or on the wall, etc etc.

And.. if you run out of food.. there is always a garland

My grandma told me that back during the Depression, there wasn't a lot of money to buy Christmas tree ornaments for their trees. Popcorn, however, was inexpensive (especially if that's what you farmed) and it only took a couple of hand-fulls of uncooked corn to make enough to decorate the trees. I think the tradition just kinda stuck.
