I am new to using Windows XP. I noticed that shortly after starting my computer, that my 'Start' button changed from green to gray. Also the font of the button and the programs in the task bar changed. Is this normal? The green start button returns after rebooting.

Sounds like a performance setting. Mine is grey because I have my system set for best performance instead of looks. See if this helps you.

Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>under Performance click Settings>under visual effects you can choose best performance, best appearance or let windows decide. I recommend best performance.

It might be set to Windows Classic Mode. To change it back to the XP default, right-click the desktop, click properties, click the appearance tab, and select Windows XP from the first drop-down menu.

Go to Control panel, click the power option button and see the setting there especially the power scheme and Hibernate options. Check those to default e.g. Turn off monitor: 20 or 30 minutes,
Turn off hard disk: Never
Stand by: Never
In Hibernate: Uncheck if checked.

It sounds like you might have spyware. Get Ad-Aware and SpyBot from download.com, install and run them both, Ad-Aware first. Do a complete, full scan, and remove everything it finds. If this stops the problem, fine. If not, then run SpyBot.

After that, run Ad-Aware daily if you are on the internet a lot, but do a Smart Scan, which is much faster and will still find adware and spyware.

It is not normal. Try running a virus scan or a spyware scan with McAfee antivirus or CA antivirus etc.
