In my opinion, the ideal school education would have both Indian and American characteristics.
Indian characteristics: No way to avoid basics, thorough grounding, memorization
American characteristics: Creativity, self-esteem of child is encouraged, freedom to grow
In my opinion, the ideal college education is the American one.
From the point of the view of the individual, education should be a life-long pursuit. You should keep reading. That doesn't have to be classics. Read Thomas L. Friedman to appreciate the economy, for instance. Or Stephen Hawking to understand quantum physics. Education should not be attached to some goal, like a degree or graduation. It should feel "unforced", and of its own accord.
Education should also fulfil certain goals.
It has to make us a lot happier and wiser. That's where spirituality comes into play. You are not really educated unless you can handle situations well.
Education should also be effective and practical. In India, starting salaries are on the lower side for college graduates. This is because it seems, they are not equipped with real life skills.

Well American education is different than other places but around here the idea behind education is to teach your kids that homosexuality is good, heterosexuality is wrong. Paganism is good, Christianity is bad. Also to break up happy and healthy homes so the kids can experience the loving care of an abusive foster home. Shall I go on?

education is the continual process by which an individual consciously seeks out information as they live their life. It can be simple observation, reading, doing, asking or an actual credit or none credit class but in the end it is really only a mind set about wanting to be more than ignorant, uninformed and a burden to those around you and the rest of the words.

education is a liberating force, & in our age it is also a democratising force, cutting across the barriers of caste and class, smoothing our inequalities imposed by birth & other circumstances.
