Your call, while important to you and "quick," probably came at a very bad time for your boss. Don't take it personally, but do pay attention.

How should you respond? My recommendation is for you to appologize for the interruption, and say that - from now on - you WILL ask if you are interrupting when you call. Then, be sure to do exactly that.

This is a perfectly reasonable request, although it may not have sounded that way at the time.

Your boss may have been in the middle of closing a sale (which pays both your salary and her/his salary), helping another customer (which pays both your salary and his/her salary), or handling some other crisis which required quick action.

It's not clear what size the organization is or how long you've been working there, but my guess is that it's a small organization and you are relatively new there. As you get to know your co-workers better (assuming you have co-workers), you may find that another employee can give you good answers to your question without the risk of bugging your boss.

Don't obsess over this. Your boss should consider this a minor, new-person kind of error and not hold a grudge. And, you should learn not to do this, since it obviously bugs your boss, and not hold a grudge, either. No big deal for either of you.

Don't worry!

Just apologize, and remember to ask next time, if you need to call the boss, to ask if he or she has time for a quick question. It's not really that big a deal.

Look for another job; you obviously work for a self-centered jerk that is quick to point out "his time is more valuable than yours", mostly likely because he only wants to believe that is true. Work for someone who will mentor you into the type of leader that you want to be.
