Personally, I like the free AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Yes it is safe to use free antivirus programs. Lots of people use them. Remember you can not run 2 anti-virus programs or 2 firewalls at the same time. They will fight each other.

It is not only safe - You must use an anti virus program on Windows systems; of course if you are on an Mac computer or Linux type computer for the time being your don't.
