In parts of the North West of England like Liverpool, people stand outside their?

houses gossiping away.. I'm from the South East and moved there about 8 years ago, but then moved back down South, but I always noticed this phenomenon...

I used to find it really uncomfortable walking past groups of neighbours gathered outside each others homes.. why does this tend to happen more so in the North of England than the South... and it isn't because people are more neighbourly in the North...

Where I live about 35 miles from London my neighbours all know each other but we just don't do this... I'm not saying this makes us better ... I just find it interesting the way different communities work..

If what you say is true then it seems to me that people in the north are more neighborly. It's not enough that people in a community know who everyone is. It helps that they get out of their own little world at home and communicate face to face, even if it is just gossip. Sadly, people usually talk about other people in the community. You don't seem to find too much conversation related to world politics between people talking over a fence. I'm not saying people down south are bad, I'm just saying it's good that people are willing to go out and share that bit of fence between themselves from time to time. Who knows, maybe people in the south get on the telephone and share a "virtual" fence with each other. It is interesting how different communities work though, isn't it.

I can only think it's a 'hangover' from working class days when you used to get the housewives beating their carpets, brushing their steps, etc and passing the time of day with their neighbours at the same time. It used to always be seen in the 'streets of the north'. Now it has evolved into groups of people in the streets. The only logical reason I can think of, and I'll probably get lynched for saying it, is because they would not trust the people they're talking to in their own homes!

the northerners are industrial, urban communities, from tenement to back to backs they have always lived in each others pockets. they rely on each other for support and live very close together.
this is very unlike the agricultural south, where farming and fisheries mean that families are tighter rather than extended systems of neighbours

I've lived in the north and in London too.
I found more of a sense of community in the north, whereas southerners keep their doors firmly closed.
Historically northerners have been poorer than their southern counterparts, and poorer people tend to band together more--you know, strength in numbers.
I also found northerners to be more social, more willing to help each other in times of need.

Yep i can officially confirm that northerners stick together! but it can become a bit of a pain in the a**e sometimes
