It sounds like your baby is teething. I am breastfeeding a 15 month old with teeth so biting is very bothersome.
I release the mouth by putting my finger between the nipple and bubs and then repostition him.
Try holding your baby the way you did in the first weeks. Maybe use a pillow as support and really prop baby up and close to the breast.
Switch to the otherside if it still hurts because sometimes they postion better on 1 nipple over the other.
If that fails say a firm no and try again, if bubs bites again put him/her down for 20 mintues and have a break. Remember to try and relax.

I've been advised, though I've never had to use this one, to press the baby into your breast when he bites-- this will make him release the suck on your breast and open his mouth. Then take him away from the breast and let him know that feeding is over. He'll get the hint that when he bites, he doesn't get to nurse any more and will stop the behavior... it's sort of the Pavlov's dogs theory. Also, babies bite when they're teething, as it releives the pain on their gums with the pressure. Make sure you're giving him some pain relief like Hyland's teething tablets or Tylenol, and letting him chew on a teething ring or toy so he can soothe his gums.

Gently but firmly remove your breast from his mouth. Tell him no biting. Say it loudly and firmly with out yelling. Wait 5 minits be fore putting him back on. Do this every time he bites. He will soon get the idea that if he wants to eat he is not aloud to bite.

Try to stay calm, and just leave your baby alone for a few minutes in a save place. Even if he/she cries, he/she will understand that he/she did something wrong...repeat this for a few times.
I had the same problem, and now my daughter is 7 months old and doesn't bite me anymore!

Most 4 month old babies don't have teeth. Take your nipple out and tell him no, don't bite. Try not to over react or it could become a game. This passes with time.

The first words both of our children learned was "Do Bi"
This stood for the most common thing my wife said to them
"Don't Bite"
We actually overheard my daughter at age 4 telling her baby doll "Do Bi" over and over again.....

Do not stop breastfeeding....when he bites...look at him with a very sad face and say "Ow that hurts!" and take him right off....keep doing it every time he bites, and he will get the point.
