Two years ago I lost my job. I am 54 years old and lost a job which paid over $25./hr. Now I am strugling to make ends meat and making sometimes $10,000/yr. This year won't be that good. My child support is $600/month. and the state of Missouri says that they won't review my support because my youngest son is going to be 18 within a year. I have no state agency to help me with this. I tried to contact my US. representative and got no reply. If I want to have it change the only way is to pay an attorney to do it for me, and I don't have anyone in the state to tell my X that she needs to let my children come and see me or call me. I haven't heard from them for a year, the last time I happened to be in the town that they live in and ran into them. They don't take my phone calls, I do leave a message though. I have missed out on my youngest sons teens, and it hurts.

The way the state sees it, you have the "ability" to earn $25/hour, therefore your children deserve to be supported based on $25/hour. You don't say why your income dropped so significantly, but how do you even eat on $10,000 a year? I know you can't afford a place to live. Someone must be supporting you. The child support program is a federal program administered by the states, and the law says both parents can request a modification once a year. So send a letter explaining your situation and demand a modification hearing. It's your right. And if your reasons are legitimate (and you're not working under the table to keep from having to pay child support), it will be granted. But you can't just decide you don't want to work at a good or hard job anymore. If it is at all within your power, you have to support your children in the way they have become accustomed. If that wasn't the case, 99% of the guys who get divorced would be working at Burger King making $5.25 an hour.
But, on the other hand, I know there are some guys out there that really are getting screwed. If this is the case, call your local legal aid agency. Or plead your case when you get called in front of the judge.

Certainly doesn't sound that fair but come the end of the day you will know that you've done what was court ordered and not been a drop dead dad. Certainly there should be some form of equity for you to reduce your payments as your income has decreased drastically. Is there not a pro-bono lawyer or a lawyer that is paid by the state that could help you. Or can you not speak on your own behalf in court. I live in Canada so our laws are probably a bit different that our neighbours to the south but you could contact the courthouse ad they may give you some resources that may be able to help you with this situation,. Best of luck with all your issues.

Sac up man. You had children and you have responsibility. Find yourself a better paying job, I know they are out there.

You haven't heard from them in a year? Well, go see them. You obviously are sending the check somewhere.

You are 54 years old and still need to grow. Quit your whining!
