definition of racism:

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

So, I'm going to say "no" is the answer for this question. You don't know for sure what the people who aren't talking to you are thinking. Surely they are thinking of SOMETHING that makes them not want to talk to Indians... and it COULD be racism-related... but at least some of the time it might not be.

It definately must be related you being from India and them not being from India. But what are the possibilities? Perhaps some of them would rather talk to someone in their country as they would perhaps have more in common with such a person (pop culture... they're nearby and have similar experiences and childhoods), would perhaps want to later MEET said person (date, hookup, whatever), would perhaps feel more certain that said person knew American English (yes, I do understand that most Indians have decent educations AND have learned English, whether this them being leery that you don't know English is valid or not... this is not an example of racism), would perhaps feel that an American would be easier to talk to if they wanted to: cuss, use common American slang and phrases, etc... etc...

I don't doubt that it could be racist... i.e. Example American goes... "ugh... it's a dirty, poor Indian"... or something aweful like that.

Most encounters I've had with Indians on the internet (not in person... I've been to college with many)... involved said Indian messaging ME out of the blue and trying to practice their English on me. This happened at least 8 times. They typed reeeeealllly slowwwww (or else took forever to send messages for whatever reason)... and the conversation quality was aweful. Hi, how are you, lovely weather... blah blah... um... can I get back to work you creepy stranger?

That's pretty rude if you were talking though and they just stopped when you said you were Indian... :( no explaination from them? I guess there are also less manners online.

well, I think they might do that because if they had bad experience with people annoying other people on YM. If you talk to people in a proper way then they won't be annoyed or feel like they are being harassed. Many times I hear complaints from people how they are being harassed and consistently annoyed online. I'm not Indian but when ever I talk to people online I talk with respect and courtesy. There are many differences between American and Indian culture.

I do not think that it is a type of racism. I think that people in chatrooms are looking for "relationships" and to discuss things with others that they have things in common with. Those individuals seeking a "relationship" know that it is easier to drive to another state to meet than it is to fly to another country. As for those seeking to talk about common ground they may be under the impression that they don't have anything in common with people from the Eastern Hempshire.

Well you can say its racism although, i'd say they are being judgemental. but maybe the person you'll be chatting to is not looking for companiionship with an idian.

yep. racism is weird. If you treat anyone differently because of there race its racist. I could be nice to native americans because I really respect them and they look bad ^ss. But this is racism also. until you get to a point (wich im almost at) where it really doesnt matter what color anyones skin is. And everyone is just a person then you are no longer racist. Besides I dont go around and see if people have green eyes and then treat them shitty or not talk to them......although....I probably should.
