The earliest you can find out is at about 12 weeks (the test is done earlier, but you have to wait for the results).
A chorionic villus sampling, or CVS, is usually performed between 10 and 12 weeks. Studies suggest the risk of miscarriage to be between 1/2 and 1 percent, which puts it at twice the estimated risk of miscarriage following an amniocentesis. It typically take about 10 days to get results from a CVS.
An amnio is typicall performed between 15 and 18 weeks into the pregnancy.
You can also find out the sex from an ultrasound, but that is not as accurate as either of the two tests; with an ultrasound, the baby needs to be in the right position for the tech or doctor to see the sex in the first place, and even then, it's a best guess based on what can be seen on the ultrasound. You CAN learn the sex from ultrasound as early as 12 weeks, but as a practical matter, most doctors will not tell you the sex that early, probably because the standard ultrasound equipment in most doctor's offices just isn't great enough to confidently identify the sex when the fetus is that small still. In practice, women more typically learn the sex of the baby at about 20 weeks, when the so-called "level II ultrasound" (also called an "anatomical scan") is performed. It's a more detailed ultrasound than the routine ultrasounds some women have during pregnancy and usually performed with more sensitive equipment. Most of the time (provided you have a good doctor and good equipment, and the baby cooperates) the ultrasound correctly identifies the sex of the baby, but of course there are errors; not surprisingly, it's more likely that you'll be told you're having a girl and have it turn out to be a boy than vice versa.

if you need to find out the sex of your baby, the earliest you can do that is at 10 weeks by amniocentesis. and that's an invasive technique. chorion villus sampling can be done at 8-10 weeks which is little more invasive, and carries a risk of abortion. a non-invasive ultrasound carried at 16-18 weeks will reaveal a boy or a girl.
