Since I am a pastor, I will answer this from that prospective. If someone dies, I firmly believe they do know instantly that they have. If they had trusted Jesus Christ for full payment for their sin before they died, they will instantly be in heaven with the LORD (Paul said for him to die would be gain and that the he would be with the LORD when he died)
If one dies without having trusted God...well Jesus talked about the rich man who lived only for himself and the words Jesus used were ....and in hell he lifted up his eyes and he was in torments. (this can be found in Luke chapter 16)

I think if people die suddenly, I think they don't realize it at first. My father died while resting in bed because of not feeling well. Not too long after, while my sister was sleeping, she had a dream about talking to our Dad on the phone. He mentioned going to an upcoming family wedding. When my sister told him he was dead, he hung up the phone. I think that was when he realized he was not with us anymore.

No, the dead know nothing, we are asleep until the second coming of Jesus Christ, time ceases to exist, so the next conscience experience will seem like You just fell asleep and just woke up,then You will be with the Lord, that's why it's called resting in peace
