Awlgrip is the best paint to use especially for the lower unit. Make sure the surfaces are clean and smooth then apply the paint which will harden like a rock. If you use ordinary off the shelf brush on or sprays it won't last long, again especially on the lower unit.

Engine manufacturers make the colors available for what ever make of outboard you have, or pick a color from an engine co. (Merc, Johnson etc.) any dealership will have it avilable in a spray can, fine sand area, clean with mineral spirits, and paint (thin coats, don't try to do it in one shot, light coats), there is an anti-fouling clear coat also available to prevent barnicles (Marine store)

Use an industrial paint made for your type of material. Also Epoxy paints are very hard and durable.

A good laquer works well. But make sure the surface is well rubbed down and free of grease.
