By working and giving a portion of your income to the needy and by encouraging others to do the same. By realizing that we in the U.S. have many hungry children also. We don't have to go around the world to find hunger.

You cannot..unless you go to the root cause of the problem (i.e. our current political and economical system that inevitably creates poverty) and "fix" it. But given that "fix"ing the problem will involve imposing one's will on another, and hence will be undemocratic (i.e. illegitimate), we are stuck!

Of course to make yourself feel better and less guilty (and to help just a tiny bit in the process), you can help local institutions that help the poor. One I like in NY is City Harvest because they are an umbrella organization and do not discriminate based on religion, race, etc.

World peace is a pipe dream we all wish for but will never attain. Most people cannot get along with the next person around them (family, spouse, co-workers, etc.), leave alone others around the world.

I am a universalist who wishes and hopes for world peace. It should be set as an ultimate goal toward which we should all strive, but the reality is we will never achieve it (like most other ideals!).

Poverty and prosperity are economist made terms that suffer frequent changes in their definition - from one of resources available to a person, to opportunities available for his growth (poverty as lack of opportunity to grow). But the most critical issue is, does prosperity - a symbol of emancipation - afford peace and joy to the individual or at least impart a refinement in his personal and social worth? The poor have least expectations and find greater contentment in earning the minimum needs (I speak in Indian context). The rich suffer from various diseases like diabetes and blood pressure, sleeplessness and fears. They are always greedy to earn more and more and then to protect what they had earned. Gandhiji, the Father of Indian Nation, once said "nature produces enough for all and if only everyone took his own share and no more, there would be no scarcity.." In another context he said that whoever saved /hoarded more resources than was necessary for him / his family, was actually stealing the same from society.
Further you have linked poverty with world peace. Indeed it was the surmise of some experts that "poverty was the worst pollutant" as the poor were prone to tresspass on common resources and disturb the ecology. They may revolt and disturb the harmony of a country. But the fact was and is that, it was and is the rich who consume all sort of things in extravagance who contibute to pollution, cut throat (trade) competitions and disturb the relationships among nations. The energy required to produce various articles of consumption are so huge that consumerism results in the generation of huge quantity of toxic gases and effluents that pollute the world. The subject was discussed in an Environment Convention of UN (population or consumption levels that contribute most to global pollution) in the last decade.
So we must not mix up the concepts and search for solution on the basis of wrongly understood interplay of issues relating to poverty and peace.
Propagation of right values among the people - for optimal consumption and use of resources and avoidance of exploitation and wastage, etc - would ensure equitable distribution of the same among the humans and usher in peace.

Begin by looking around you, and helping where you can. Be peaceful inward and outward. Speak peace in all situations. Refrain from the company of contentious people, who bring disharmony into your life and the lives of others.

Give food to food banks, donate to local shelters for the homeless, put money in the Salvation Army kettle. Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and help build homes.

Invest in and support companies that employ others.

Each One,Teach One.Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.Peace comes when people show respect for others rights to exist.Poverty ends when greed and self are abolished. There is so much in this universe that could be shared and given to all,but the few,or many who want it all cause unbalance and hatred from those being denied what they see and know they are entitled to by birthright.
