Well that mentality I do believe is reserved for someone with a pathology we need to figure out.
Something has confused them to the point where they do believe they are entitled to the item, therefore, it is acceptable that they take it by any means necessary. I can't help but remember "The Bad Seed" where Rhoda believes that Claude Dagel's penmanship medal should have gone to her. Therefore, she is willing to drown the little boy just to have his medal. She truly believed it should belong to her.
But then I must make a confession. (I so can't believe I'm going to stay this in front of the whole world.........but here goes) When I was in kindergarten I was the worst about stealing. I would see something I wanted..... and i would take it. I knew it was wrong... but I wanted it. I knew I knew it was wrong because I would then lie about where I got it. The thing was...... at 5 years old..... I was good at lying about it. (spooky eh?) I'd come home with a little trinket.... a little doll.... a book...... and each time I would tell my mom that we had a birthday party at school and these were the party favors. My mom actually didn't catch on until she realized that the number of parties we seemed to be having surpassed the number of kids in my class. It was then that I had to gather up every single item I had stolen and go to each and ever person (including my teacher who I stole the book from) and tell what I did and apologize. MAN was that a lesson I learned!!!!
No... I'm not a Rhoda.... and no I haven't stolen anything since Kindergarten. And no I didn't steal because I felt things should belong to me. Just as all of the answerers before me have said...... people steal for a variety of reasons. Survival to contempt. But the ones that believe they deserve what they are stealing............ definitely are pathological.

Difficult question to answer.
Certainly there are those who don't want to work for a living and resort instead to stealing. Some feel society has enough and they should share part of the wealth. They feel entitled. Nevermind that some people have worked an entire lifetime to own a house or a new car. They just see what is in front of them and not the struggle of how this was achieved. To me these are the worst offenders.
Stealing results from many different problems. Hunger, poverty or just plain greed.
I too had my wings clipped so to speak (similar to Dee's story) as I used to steal candybars, holy pictures (don't laugh) and other things which I could never buy. I was not given an allowance so had no means of buying a treat whereas all the other little kids could do that.
It was through the generosity of a sweet old lady (who's store I pillaged at times) that finally taught me how wrong it was and I never stole another thing in my life after that. She promised never to tell my parents and I kept my promise too.
I am not sure if this is something most kids go through. But there are always reasons for doing so however simple or complicated they may be.

I suppose that could be the reason.
Or they could just be impulsive or rash or compulsive...
I think people don't want to really think about what their life would be like without the 'item' they're stealing.
They feel as though they need it for some purpose or whatever and that they just won't be the same without it.
It's kind of odd... why people steal.
Sometimes people have nothing and need to steal something just to feel a little...'satisfied' or 'content'.

Some people steal because they are greedy and don't want to work for what they have and others steal because they are desperate

To show themselves how smart they are that they can steal and can get away.
Some due to psychological reason due to a disorder known as kleptomania.

Someone could fool themselves into believing that, so they don't feel the guilt that comes along with stealing.

not necessarily.....because these people might be stealing because they actually have problems in their life and might think that stealing stuff that isnt theirs will gain them power from other people and they just assume its for the best which it totally isnt!

unless they are stealing for survival; a loaf of bread, for example, they are stealing because they have a basic contempt for themselves and for their lives, their world
they have a disrespect and they express it by ignoring all rules of propriety; rules of propriety are based upon respect
