I mean, some people--I am one of them--that cannnot sing, dance or are good at sports. Their grades aren't good and there is nothing they are the best or at least very good at it. I ask this question because i was taught that everyone has secret talents but how true is that?

I think that, 1st of all, singing, dancing, sports and grades are not the only talents you can have. 2nd of all, no one is born talented. If you want to be talented at, lets say, your grades, you shold study more, or if you want a better voice, take voice lessons. And 3rd of all, you won't ever become talented while you tell yourself you have no talents. You probably are talented at some things, you just have to work on them.

What you call talent is better understood as intelligence. Different kinds of intelligence:
Mathematical intelligence, spacial intelligence, musical intelligence, intelligence of language and logic, intelligence of the body, and so on. All together 12 types. Everyone has an individual combination of all types of intelligences, some may have a lot of one type and less of another, some may have a more ”even distribution”:)

When you have a lot of one type, you could be ”gifted”. But being gifted does not mean trained. And most things demand training/learning to take full advantage of a ”talent”.
So a person who’s gifted may be less accomplished at a subject, than a less gifted person who has years of training.

Further more, the subjects you give as examples are not the only ones to be gifted at. At school you only concentrate on a few subjects, in a particular kind of way.
Remember that the learning structure in school does not suit everyone. And this is unfortunate, as some people may leave school thinking they have nothing special about them.

Also, some who have broken the school-codes and get very good grades, may not necessarily do well in working with a subject out in ”real life”. The job they’re educated for could include working/interacting with many people. And that demands an intelligence type they’re maybe not trained for. While others in the same education, who did’t get such good grades, can still do really well at the job because they have good people skills.

So. If you’re not going to win the Olympics next year ( which by the way very few people do;)), relax and concentrate more on what you LIKE to do.Find new things to like. This will very likely be what you are good at, or could train to be good at. In your way. Best wishes.

I have a firm answer to this. No.
Everyone has GOT to have a talent. You just haven't found yours yet.

You were taught right. Everyone has a secret talent and you find that hard to believe (as you said "how true is that") because the keyword is "secret", which means hard to find. Someone who has not found his/her talent definitely will be sceptical about this secret talent thing.

You cannot sing, dance or be good at sports. That doesn't mean anything. There are lots of other fields to venture into. Art, literature, science, martial arts... maybe you may get good at something that you've never tried before.

One last thing. Talent is something that a person is born with, but it is also something that can be cultivated. If you are not good at something, for example (dancing), if you have the heart, nothing can stop you from getting good at it even though you were not born with the dancing talent. When you get good at it, that's your new found talent. That's right. Talent can be made, in my opinion. I know I made mine.

I believe every person is good at doing something. I would like to think that every person has a gift. However, I have learned that it is not always true. Generally, people are good at something. But being 'gifted' is a different thing.

You will come across many insensitive people in life who hurt others or never appreciate others. I am sure such people may be good at something but they are not 'gifted'.

To be 'gifted' you need a rare degree of intuition, sensitivity, and a questioning nature. You should have a conscious and some insight. I consider myself lucky because I realized very early in life where my true potential was.

From the very beginning I had deep love for art. I had won many art (drawing, painting) competitions in my school and college days. My father bought a piano for my sister. She never played it. I just tried to play it; I enjoyed it; I practiced for a year and soon I could play very well; then I even started composing my own music:)

I was seventeen - one day I saw the cartoon strips in the newspaper. I tried to draw those cartoons. I was hooked. After one year of rigorous practice I excelled in it. My cartoons became popular among my relatives and friends. When you are on the right track, everything just falls into right place. I was very bad at studies in school. I was terrible in studies and bad in sports. But I found something that gives me pleasure. Yeah, cartooning. Now I work as a cartoonist for a newspaper and several magazines. I really enjoy it.

As I went on trying new things, I started discovering my talents. Now I am a good cartoonist, pianist, artist, and poet. I have interest in clay animation. So now I want to learn clay animation.:)

I strongly recommend you read a book 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho. You will find it any library or book store. Don't miss this book. Read it!

Just do things you've never done before or something you've always wanted to do. Try to discover your hobby and you might find your talent there. Singing, dancing, painting are not the only talents. There is much more to it. You just have to discover it. It's just like finding love. Follow your dream and you will find your talent.

Wish you luck.
Cheers:)

No dear, it is not true. I read a quote in one of the sites of yahoo that said "every child is gifted, only thing is some open the packet later than others.." (may be I had changed the well chosen words of the quote but the meaning is this). You know Gregor Mendel the father of Genetics was so poor in general studies but threw open the doors of a complex science to us? Thomas Edison was a dyslexic (child with learning disability) who could not write a single gramatically right sentence (according to a literature on dyslexia) but gave 1000 plus findings of eternal utility to humanity... Do not degrade yourself by comparing with every other person... You will have your time someday... also, everyone need not be an expert or gifted... being good and sincere would be enough blessing in this world...

talent is in a way subjective, maybe you think you are not good in singing, dancing etc.. but someone else thinks differently just maybe not in your community or country lol. anyway talent is just an overrated illusion we've been taught when we were young what is good, what is bad and all those things. and it's really relative to place and culture the way they see talent.
who knows? bitter may turn out sweet after all, maybe if you are confident enough and love what you do. you might start to believe you have talent and people will too eventually.
and btw do you know? you having no talent is talent...

Some people try so hard to find their talent that they miss it altogether. Things like pressure from our peers and society in general make people desire abilities they were not designed to do and they spend a lot of time trying to fit into a talent rather than live within their created talents. Everyone has talents. Maybe we have placed too much admiration on the word "talent" in our society. Could it be that we only acknowledge a talent if it is seen as something extraordinary or spectacular? That could be why some people think they are void of talent. Talent is given to each of us in order to help us not only maintain but also prosper in this world.
Thanks, I enjoyed this question.

Talent is a vague word. Does it mean you were born with it? Does it mean you found it easy when you worked hard at it? I am suggesting that you, much like me at bowling or tennis, or reading sheet music, find some things a bit difficult and do not find pleasure in failing, so you certainly do not keep trying. There isn't anything wrong with that, either unless you quit trying at everything. I don't think I have to keep trying to play tennis. I tried four times, I think. I bowled at least 100 games and never bowled higher than 120. I read sheet music too slowly to keep up with the music, and I tried as much as I want to.
The thing to remember is this: Nobody is good at something they do not like, and nobody likes something they are not good at, so they do not get better. If you think of one thing that you kinda like, even though you are not good at it, you could probably get better if you analyzed which part of it is the hardest for you. Like bowling....my wrist turns on the release. If I wanted to get better at it I could not turn my wrist, after much practice, and concentration. The next thing to remember is this: No matter how busy you kept yourself, you could never do every hobby in the world before you died of old age. Go to the library and look at books all over, in different sections of the library. I am sure you will find something that looks like something you would be good at, even if it turns out being research at which you are good. Or being an expert on the subject of a certain writer. Have fun looking! There's a thousand things there for you to try!

No one can say they have no talents at all unless they've tried everything. If you truly believe you're not good at anything, work harder to improve what you think needs work and in the meantime keep trying as many different things as you can, as you probably have real talent in an area you haven't discovered yet. Perhaps you have a great talent in a minor field you haven't really considered, like being a good listener or just being generally cheerful a lot. Good luck :)

I think that it's very rare to come across a person who has no talents whatsoever. Just because you aren't good at singing, dancing, school-work, and sports doesn't mean you aren't good at anything. Most people are good at something or other. I'm sure if you thought about it properly you'd be able to think of something you are good at.
