In my opinion, people have spiritual needs. They need to believe in something that is bigger and more powerful than them. It seems to be something that is hard-wired into the human brain. That need doesn't necessarily have be filled by religion. But humans construct religions in order to fill that need. So yes, having a mechanism for fulfilling spiritual needs helps people maintain their sanity. But there are also true believers - whether they are literal believers or believers in allegories which speak to spiritual truths, they believe.

Well according to me I think that people should'nt follow a religion because it is the religion that their parents or family members followed or because it is the religion that had the most influnce on their lives while they grew up and to consider it the truth and at the same time consider other religions that exit to be false. I think that people should follow a religion on the basis of convicing evidence and at the sametime beleive in the freedom of religion.

The question arises because many professed followers of various religions seldom adhere to the teachings of their own religious scriptures. But it is the same thing with every other field. The teachers teach ethics and good behavior to children, but how many of them follow the great ideals they eloquently speak ? The lawyers and judges elaborate the letter and spirit of the law of the land and demand justice for their clients, but how many of them act justly with their friends and neighbors, nay, their own family members sometimes? Gandhiji, Father of Indian Nation, once said " Euclid's line is one without breadth but no one can draw such a line (since the thinnest line would have a thin breadth), even so, the ideals set by our Prophets and forefathers - in religion, ethics or what not - are not totally reachable (in content as well as in number of followers), but it is keeping in mind such ideals that humanity makes progress"

I do believe, but I think it is something that has been twisted around to fit the needs of certain people and organizations. As long as you live honestly and follow the golden rule, I think you'll be ok.

I find it difficult to believe that many people actually, sincerely believe in religion, I think it's just a good excuse for insanity.

Many people choose to believe in a Deity for comfort, so Yes!!, it is a form of "medication" to ensure ones sanity.

I prefer tequila, at least until it proved itself to be the poison and not the medicine.

Peace.

"Tell me what you spend your time and money on and I'll tell you what is your God ."

Hard as it maybe to believe (ha! no pun intended) some people or either so dim or so deluded that they actually believe in their religion... of course they disbelieve in every other religion.
