Hi - try this link.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/companions/index.shtml

It lists all the Doctor's companions & there are clickable links to get to the photos so that you can check whether or not it's the right one.

(oh & there is also this site

By accomplice do you mean "companion"?

If so, you might be talking about Adric. He wasn't a companion to the 3rd Doctor though. He joined in the last season of Tom Baker's incarnation, and died in "Earthshock" in Peter Davison's run.

The actor was Matthew Waterhouse.

You're thinking of Adric - played by the youngest ever companion Matthew Waterhouse. He was the Azarean genius who was the 5th Doctor Peter Davison's companion. He died - the only companion ever to do so - in the Cyberman story Earthshock.
Matthew has retired from acting. He's a novelist now living in the USA - Connecticut i think.

Adric. He came in at the end of Bakers reign and sacrificed himself to destroy the cybermen in 'earthshock' in the davison years. Never realy cared for him myself. His real name is Matthew Waterhouse.
