does it mean just to make someone laugh out loud? Or does it imply boisterous, even to some extent uncontrolled laughter?

It means to make someone really laugh, not necessarily out of control.

We use this saying Downunder and it means... you make me laugh a lot... (in other words the person who .. "cracks you up laughing" is a consistenly, funny person...comedy should be their preferred profession, perhaps)!......Merry Xmas.
