I have to speak up for us non-English internet users. We can't all be from UK/US you know. I dare you to post a correct comment on an Icelandic web-site. I'm not trying to be rude or anything but it's really common for people with English as their 1st language to be really arrogant towards people that have a different 1st language.
However, I also agree with you.. I hate when I see misspellings in Icelandic text and of course the Yahoo-QA offers a spelling check which we should all use regardless of our nationality. :)

Blame it on the Public School System. Teachers do not care if students learn, they're only concerned with NOT losing Federal Funds if the graduation rate is deemed too low. The teachers are 95% Liberal Democrats, and University Professors are 98% Liberals. What do these figures tell you? A recent mailing by a nonprofit organization in my municipality showed some schools have only a 58% attendance rate for high school. Huh? I guess the Liberal parents don't care either or just don't know if their children attend or not. Have you ever heard the phrase " good school district "? What this means is Private Schools, it never refers to a Public School wherein a good portion of the teachers would not be able to pass an SAT. Why? Because it is a union. Besides, Liberals are too concerned with their own lives than to raise children - just stick them in a day-care, like a kennel; then let the teachers babysit their brats all day; then let the kids hang out on street corners after they "graduate", just don't bother the parents, lol.

There are many reasons for this.
You must know one thing, not everybody are lucky enough to be well educated and to be gifted by knowing the English language.
In Yahoo answers, some people maybe from other countries where less people speak English and so they will be influenced.
Some people may also use yahoo answer to LEARN English, because it helps us in our communicating skills.
Another thing you must know is, many people answer just to get points. So they would be in a hurry in answering and wouldn't consider using the "check spelling " function.
Another reason of people not using the " check spelling " function is, maybe they are living in a country where the internet speed is extremely slow, an example of this is where I live, Indonesia. High speed internet is expensive here, so many people stick to the dial-ups which can be extremely slow. The range of its speed it 20-50 kb/s. So they would rather not check they're spelling, as by just clicking it, it would take 10 minutes to finish.
Think over it, some people just can't help it, you are considered lucky......

often the do use shorthand. Some people, like me a lot, I'll admit it, when the have an idea in their heads, and their fingers start to typing, they go faster and faster, and don't realize the mistakes. Some people aren't properly educated, and some people don't know how to spell. A lot of people use the angering technique "written as dictated", meaning they write what they would say to you if you were standing in front of them. Slang, and uncommon phrases come into play here.

English is such a hard language to grasp. There is no consistency in its grammar and spelling rules.
I know that a lot of my students who struggle with spelling were taught to read by phonics and "sounding" words out. It really messed them up later in life. Now they spell words as they sound.

Yes, I agree with you about some of the answers. I think alot of people are just trying to get points and probably alot of highschoolers that would rather give smart*** answers instead of doing their homework. There has also been a plan in effect for over 30 years called,"The dumbing down of America". It seems to be working very well.

It is either because of their age that they tend to use slang around their peers or bad schools. Some people do not have the privilege of going to a good school or have parents that are willing to teach them. The ones who sit their kids in front of tv and let them play videogames all day turn out that way.
