Does any one know anything about the Turk and Caicos Islands? I'm thinking of taking a job over there (on Provo), and have done lots of reading on the internet about the islands. But I'm trying to get a better idea about what life i like there- what is the social scene like? Are there many young people? Are there many expats? Also, what sort of salary does a person need to live comfortably (as I hear it is an expensive place to live)?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Housing is very expensive and this comes as a shock to most people who come to TCI. Travel between Provo and the US is more expensive than travel between the US and Europe, which is unfortunate when the main hub for getting anywhere is Miami! The price of food too will probably take your breath away and sadly there is no local food, everything being imported not from the Caribbean, but from North America. One thing which you should know from the start is that you should come equipped with a good supply of vitamin supplements, as fresh fruit and vegetables from North America have been irradiated and have lost their vitamin content and many people not realising this have found that their teeth deteriorated. So get used to popping pills every day! You will also need your own transport -- to the extent that I would say that if you don't drive you shouldn't come. Aim to buy a 4X4 vehicle, as the roads are very rough in places and apt to flood in the rainy season. It should be possible to pick up a secondhand model. The only cinema was burnt down a few years back, but there are plans to build a new one very shortly. Otherwise the social scene is based very much on bars and beach life. There are plenty of young people around and they appear to be enjoying their social life. Expats are in the majority -- mainly from Haiti, followed by the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, other parts of the West Indies, North America and the UK and manifold other countries. It is a place which you'll either love or hate. I hope you will be among those who love it and I wish you well in your venture!

Turks & Caicos was a great trip. The scenery was amazing. Some of the islanders were not frienly at all. And it is very expensive. The best part was the beach. I dont know how a job would be. I would just stick to a vacation to see how you like it.

we vacationed in the Turks & Caicos and my gosh it is soooooooo beautiful...the ocean is so clear and turquoise, just wonderful! The people I thought were not so friendly towards Americans...but who knows that might have changed now. I was there 5 years ago. I would go back though for another vacation....
beautiful place!
