Does anyone know of a method (preferably an ActiveX control)
that will
tell you the speed of your connection (in bps)?

There are many sites out there that will tell you for free, just do a search. But you can right click on local area conections icon in the toolbar (bottom right looks like two monitors), then click status. This will give you an idea.

go to yahoo.com search and type in bandwidth speed test. tons of links to chose from. the test isn't all that accurate but it is something.

a better test is to set up an ftp server on a remote location (friends house, etc.) make a 1MB plain text file and put it in the ftp directory run a batch file for n number of times and take the mean.
