This is a great question. For a time, the Christmas tree was decorated WITH presents -- sugar, candy, fruits. Then, when presents became too heavy, they were put below the tree.
Here is a lovely website with the entire history of the Christmas tree from around 700 a.d.

The Christmas tree is the biggest symbol in the house of xmas and putting the presents under the tree just seems to be appropriate, it also keeps them out of the way, having them in the middle of the room would be a pain!

Nowadays presents are to big to fit in a sock on a chimney as people used to do so people had to find a new place to put the presents,
I guess the Christmas tree is a nice place to gather around and that's why it was chosen to replace the sock

Because the bottom of the tree looks bare, so we put them under the tree and it also makes it look pretty. Also there is a real tradition but im not sure what it is

The tree is a Norweigan tradition
Presents are a German contribution to the British Christmas (brought in by Queen Victoria's husband Albert)
I think we put the two together

Well everything has to be somewhere. When my children were young enough to believe in Santa we keep early presents hidden but now they're older we put them under the tree so we know where they are.

So the presents keep cool under the tree and don't melt from the heat of the sun.
