Actually the first white group to record for Motown was The Valideers, who did the original version of "Greetings This Is Uncle Sam" in 1961 (a minor hit five years later for the Monitors, a group featuring future Temptation member Richard Street). This group was recommended to Gordy by legendary soul man Jackie Wilson. This single was originally released on the short-lived Motown subsidiary label Miracle Records [#MIR 6] (label slogan: "If it's a hit, it's a Miracle").
The first white female to record for Motown was Debbie Dean (also 1961) who recorded an answer song to the Miracle's "Shop Around") called "Don't Let Him Shop Around". She later became a Motown staff writer who co-wrote a 1968 top-50 r&b/pop hit for Martha Reeves and The Vandellas ("I Can't Dance To The Music You're Playing").
Another noteable white Motown artist was Chris Clark, a soulful blonde Miss who scored a cult hit with a tough version of Holland/Dozier/Holland's "Love's Gone Bad" in 1965. Eight years later, she received an Oscar nomination for co-writing the screenplay to "Lady Sings The Blues", Diana Ross' first movie.

I'm usually good with the 70's- but this is tough! I know for a fact that a band called Rare Earth (mowtown) are mostly white. They may have started in the mid-late 60's.
