SO2 is an acidic oxide, and will react with NaOH in two stages:

SO2 + NaOH ----> NaHSO3 (sodium hydrogensulphite)

NaHSO3 + NaOH ----> Na2SO3 + H2O (sodium sulphite)

because both r negativly charged
