It depends on your starting point.

There are two ways to get to Kovalam - one from the Trivandrum side and another from the Nagercoil/Cape Comorin (Kanniyakumari) side. If the latter, you dont enter Trivandrum at all to get to Kovalam.

If you plan to come from Cochin, then you have to go through Trivandrum.

If you are arriving at Trivandrum by either Train or by Air or even state transport buses, then you are only touching the south side of Trivandrum and make a rapid exit of the Trivandrum city and thus avoid getting to the centre of the city.

If you are taking a boat, say from Quilon, then you get to Kovalam without entering Trivandrum too!

The short answer to your Question - you dont have to enter Tvm city to get to Kovalm..

The best way to get to Kovalam Beach is via TVM on the train. The only other way around it is if you are driving yourself which doesn't seem likely.

I did the trip from Delhi to TVM and it was like a 40 hour train ride. It felt like 40 days.

When you get there. There is a restaurant right on the beach that does the best curried fish anywhere in the world. It is worth the trip just for that.

Kovalam is part of Trivandrum, just 16 KMs distance. If you are traveling to Kovalam by air or by train, Trv is the destination for both. visit the following link for more details.
