I got an ultrasound for my son and just last week to find out we will be having another boy. I think its up to the parents. If you want to get the decorating and everything done before hand it is a good idea. If you want it to be a surprise and just decorate and buy clothing, etc. in neutral colors then wait and be surprised! It also helps to maybe get some names in mind as well.

I actually wanted to know, but my husband initially wanted to be surprised. (He broke down and asked me after the first appointment where they were able to check, so he didn't last very long.) The selection where I live for clothes and things is really limited, and with the exchange rate I don't do much shopping on the local economy, so if I had waited to find out, I would have ended up with an entire nusery full of the same pastel yellow and green, and I would have gone nuts. My local PX has about 2 or 3 different onesies and sleepers in all different sizes, so if left to them for clothes, my baby will be wearing essentially the same thing for the next year. All the other outfits and things, and even the larger selection of sleepers/onesies, is either pink or blue.

i think that if you want to know, then it is your choice.

It can be a good thing to know whether your child will be a girl or boy before it is born, because you can buy clothes and toys that are suited to that sex. You can also choise which colour you are going to paint their room and other things like that.

Some people think that it is not natural, because some people take a choice about whether to keep their baby, and people think that you shpuld be happy with what you get.

But think that it is up to the parents to decide whether they want to know.

If someone wants to know then I don't see the harm... I wanted to know with my son that way I could name him, call him by his name, and do his bedroom... I wanted his room to be personalized and I wanted to refer to him by his name rather than the baby.. It felt more personal for me.. I will always want to know the sex before hand if I have anymore kids...

I think it ruins one of the true pleasant suprises of life. If/When I get pregnant I want it to be a suprise. People are too worried about gender in this culture anyway.

i want to know, but my husband doesn't. i think it's more economical, because then you can ask for boy or girl clothes, instead of having to return 1/2 the stuff you get. you can get the room ready, etc. don't worry, i'll get my way.

it was nice to tell my husband's dying grandmother that we were expecting a boy because we had decided to name our first born son after both my husband's grandfathers.. and she did get to meet our son a few monthes after he was born, and yes to prepare was a great help i got a bunch of hand me downs. plus as i think on it a girl is more expensive because now you have to buy dresses too etc.
